Phobias, according to the Merriam-Webster's Medical Dictionary, are an exaggerated and often disabling fear usually inexplicable to the subject and having sometimes a logical but usually an illogical or symbolic object, class of objects, or situation.
Studies show that the only natural fears in humans are the fear of loud noises and the fear of falling - these two fears are built in to us when we are born and have a role in keeping us alive when we are hunting for mammoths.
All other fears are learned responses. We attach an emotional response to a memory or image and then when we relive that memory or recall that image, we feel the same negative response.
The great news is that anything that we have learned can be unlearned. The even better news is that most of the time it takes minutes! Even better, it is quite painless - no "face your fears".
